Huron House Boys' Home was incorporated as a non-profit charitable organization in 1970. The Boys' Home is a licensed residential treatment home for 28 boys between 12 and 18 years of age. We are a member agency of the Children's Mental Health Ontario Association.
Many boys in our care have trouble with anger management, school performance, significant emotional trauma,a nd aggression. Conduct Disorder, ADHD and other psychiatric difficulties are typical of the boys in our care. We have a child to staff ratio of 4:1 plus a Clinical Social Worker (MSW) involved with each child so we are able to provide in-depth support counselling and guidance to each boy as needed.
Unfortunately we are not positioned to help boys with issues around fire setting or who have a history of significant sexual predation. We do accept referrals for a boy with a mild developmental handicap.
The Huron House Boys' Home is a highly structured program with lots of activities both on and off the property for the boys to become involved in. There are several fundamental components to our program that are integral to our success. Education that is community-based, individually defined according to the youth's need and strongly supported by the program staff. Counselling is provided on an individual, group and family basis by our Clinical Social Worker with group work supported by the residential counsellors in anger awareness, anger management, violence, life skills, and independent living skill training. Recreation that is fun and healthy and because we have a full size gym and are situated on 12 acres of land with a tennis court, 3 hole golf course, soccer field and baseball diamond, we can provide any kind of activity that a young boy may be interested in. Reinvestment into our community is something we strongly believe in. The boys and staff volunteer their time to help our neighbours by cutting grass, raking leaves, supporting other local charities and church groups, as well as some of the boys enjoy visiting with seniors.
Huron House Boys' Home provides after-care support and counselling services for some of the youth and families upon discharge. Our clinical Social Work team along with our child care workers provide short term remedial brief counselling and support planning for up to 3 months upon discharge.
